Tartan Bearer storms to Epsom Derby favourite

Tartan Bearer stormed to the head of the Epsom Derby betting when landing the most prestigious of the Derby Trials, The Dante at York.

In the process, Twice Over's Derby hopes were thrown in the dustbin when Henry Cecil's defeated colt could manager just third despite starting a red-hot, odds-on favourite for the Dante.

Tartan Bearer only just held off a persistent challenge from the Irish raider, Aidan O'Brien's Frozen Fire.

The Epsom Derby betting was all-change after Twice Over's dismal flop. Tartan Bearer, who was available at 14/1 for Epsom prior to his victory was generally 4/1 afterwards.

Twice Over's trainer Henry Cecil was disconsolate. The balding Cecil said: "He never picked up properly and he was a dire disappointment. I expected better than that. We can't run in The Derby after that. I don't blame the ground, which was fast."

Meanwhile trainer Michael Stoute's Tartan Bearer is heading for the Epsom Derby and jockey Ryan Moore can't wait for the day.
