Abbey unchanged after meaningless gallop |
|
No doubt the gallop at The Curragh after racing on Sunday was of a great use to trainer Aidan O'Brien. All it showed the rest of us was that his Derby favourite, and various other good horses, still at least had a leg at each corner. If there was one horse who impressed it may have been Mikhail Glinka, who finished upsides Derby favourite St Nicholas Abbey. Even that was misleading as it was just an exercise and we had no clue as to what weight each horse was carrying. Maybe Joseph O'Brien allowed his mount to be a little more free than the others. The bookies can't have been impressed as they left St Nicholas Abbey at 2/1 favourite in The Epsom Derby betting, a price that feels very skinny indeed. Had the bookmakers thought the colt had gone with any sort of panache then the odds would have fallen yet again, even from their very low starting point. The current 2/1 quote is a price that says "we don't want to take any more money on this horse" rather than "we think he will win." Aidan O'Brien's number one three-year-old (at the moment) is similar odds for the 2000 Guineas, which of course comes first and always acts as a great indicator to a horse's Derby chance. Meanwhile there have been mixed messages for trainer Michael Stoute's Workforce. The racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah has dismissed the idea that the colt, an easy winner of maiden that worked out tremendously well, will run in the Derby. The bookies are not so sure and keep him at 20/1 in the Derby betting. Other connections sought to pour cold water on the story, where it was suggested Workforce was not bred to get the mile and a half Derby trip. It is hardly surprising that people don't trust these 'non-runner' rumours, after all in 2008 New Approach won The Derby after trainer Jim Bolger had stated he would not run and Binocular won the 2010 Champion Hurdle after a similar announcement by trainer Nicky Henderson.
