Murtagh chooses Rip Van Winkle for Derby |
|
Trainer Aidan O'Brien's stable jockey, Johnny Murtagh, has chosen to ride Rip Van Winkle out of the six runners the stable saddles for the Epsom Derby on Saturday. Rip Van Winkle was fourth in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and Murtagh has ridden the colt by Galileo every time he has run. However that leaves five other O'Brien runners that Murtagh rejected. The lucky beneficiaries of this mob-handed approach are Seamie Heffernan, aboard the unbeaten Derrinstown Stud Derby trial winner Fame And Glory, who was shorter in the Epsom Derby betting that Rip Van Winkle; Pat Smullen (Age of Aquarius); Ryan Moore (Black Bear Island, who won the Dante Stakes at York); Richard Hughes (Masterofthehorse); Colm O'Donoghue (who will ride Golden Sword).
